Riot police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse protesters in central Ankara on Friday. A newly introduced riot police squad using horses had been called to control the protest, which erupted in clashes after protesting power-plant workers broke through a barricade erected by police. Eight workers were detained and dozens more were injured.

The protesters work in two hydro-electric power plants located in Yatagan, Mugla province. They are demonstrating against the proposed privatization of the two power blocs, fearing the loss of their jobs should the assets be sold off.
