Protesters clashed with police in Madrid on Friday during a solidarity march for demonstrators in the Spanish city of Burgos. Protesters linked arms and stood their ground as police attempted to break up the group by force.
A decision to redevelop Calle Vitoria in Burgos amid a time of austerity has led some to demand the money be spent on social services instead of what activists say is gentrification. While the mayor of the city has suspended the project, the protests have spread beyond the capital of Castille to the capital and other parts of Spain.
On Thursday, a Spanish judge released a firefighter who was detained for allegedly defying police orders during a demonstration in solidarity with the Burgos demonstrators. Earlier in the day, his colleagues had gathered outside the Courts of Plaza Castilla in Madrid demanding his release.
